Turkish filmmaker Dervis Zaim directs the black comedy Camur (Mud), his third film. The story takes place on the Mediterranean island of Cyprus near the border between the Greek and Turkish sides, where black mud in a salt-water lake is thought to have unique healing capabilities. While affected by the ancient statues lurking over them in the present, four Turkish friends deal with their memories of the war with the Greeks: Ali (Mustafa Ugurlu) is a mute soldier, his sister Aisha (Yelda Reynaud) is a gynecologist, Halil (Bulent Emin Yarar) is her fiancé, and Temel (Taner Birsel) is a restaurant owner tormented by his personal experience in the war. Mud was shown at the 2003 Venice Film Festival as part of the Upstream competition. ~ Andrea LeVasseur, Rovi

The tenuous nature of life and politics in Eastern Europe provides the underpinnings for this drama from Turkish filmmaker Omer Kavur. Ahmet (Talat Bulut) is a journalist who takes a working holiday in Turkey, where he plans to work on a series of photos of buildings that have fallen into disuse. While dining in a cafe, Ahmet sees a group of men he believes are up to no good; he follows them to a remote area and discovers they've come to execute a man. Ahmet snaps some photos of the murder, and when he's found out, the thugs threaten Ahmet's life (as well as that of his travelling companion) if he doesn't hand over the film. While this incident is being played out in Ahmet's mind, he encounters Arzuhum (Hande Ataizi), a beautiful woman who claims her father instigated the killing. A romance quickly grows between Ahmet and Arzuhum, but Ahmet still has a number of unanswered questions when the woman disappears. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

A night club photographer, obsessed by a young woman who searches for a meaning in the sad faces he photographs every night, follows her through forgotten towns and abandoned places trying to give purpose to her mysterious search. Inspired by Kara Kitap (The Black Book, the internationally acclaimed novel by Orman Pamuk who has written the script, influenced by Sufi philosophy, Gizli Yüz) takes the viewer on a mystical journey where time becomes an important leitmotiv. At times, the audience is as lost as the protagonist in pursuing the unknown. But the film is viewed best when it is taken as it is, without searching for interpretations. The mysterious woman is played by the beautiful and talented Zühal Olcay, who is confortable in this role. In addition to several national awards, Gizli Yüz has won three awards at the Mediterranean Film Festival in Bastia (Corsica) and the Public Prize at the Fribourg Festival in Switzerland. ~ Gönül Dönmez-Colin, Rovi
