A Los Angeles cafe is the setting for this ensemble piece performed largely by a group of San Francisco stage actors. Mark (Mark Boone Jr.) is the cafe's reigning caffeine king, churning out lattes for a group of customers that includes bag lady Ma (Tsai Chin), portly Jerry (Michael McShane), widowed mathematician Jack (Jim Haynie), and on-again, off-again lovers Maria (Regina Byrd Smith) and Hank (Richmond Arquette). Another regular is Clayton (Wood Harris), a part-time delivery man who has abandoned a promising career as an artist. One day, while on his delivery rounds, Clayton discovers a strange young woman cowering in a mud puddle; stopping to help her, he learns that she has been residing there since getting dumped from a car by a callous boyfriend. After getting herself cleaned up, the woman, named Precious (Sarah Lassez), takes up with Clayton, and the two start living together. Carl Franklin made his directorial bow with the story of three LA drug dealers who, after committing a rather messy murder, hide out in a rural Arkansas town. Assuming that the local "rubes" will offer them little interference, the criminals have not reckoned with sheriff "Hurricane" Dixon (Bill Paxton). Despite the arrogance of the LAPD agents sent to Arkansas to collar the crooks, it is down-home Dixon who puts the final bloody showdown into motion (the fact that the thieves have been falling out throughout the film doesn't hurt things either). Carl Franklin knows where he's going in every frenetic frame of One False Move, and his movie was one of the most acclaimed independent releases of 1991. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Whitley (Jasmine Guy) is determined to land the best possible job after graduation, but she may end up sabotaging her chances by aiming too high. Meanwhile, Ron (Darryl M. Toby McTeague (Yannick Bisson) is a teen-aged boy, living in a flyspeck town in Northern Canada with his father and younger brother. Toby's thriving livelihood, raising and training sled dogs, is threatened by a dip in the local economy. His problems are intensified by the ongoing hostilities between Toby and his dad (Winston Reckert). Running away from home, Toby makes the acquaintance of elderly Indian chief George Wild Dog (George Clutesi), who years earlier had been "shaman," or spiritual advisor, to Toby's father. It is Chief Wild Dog who mystically brings father and son together at the film's climax, in addition to rescuing Toby's sled-dog business in a near-miraculous fashion. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Rob Lowe stars as the title character, a young hockey prodigy with a gift for scoring, but no such penchant for pugilism -- when the gloves drop, so does he. Despite his fragility, Coach Chadwick (Ed Lauter) takes him on the roster for his stick-handling ability alone. However, he ends up being sent home after being singled out by a particularly nasty goon, Racki (George Finn), who pummels the "pretty boy" in brutal fashion. Disheartened, Youngblood heads back to the rural Canadian farm he calls home, where his father (Eric Nesterenko, a former player for the Chicago Blackhawks) and older brother (Jim Youngs) teach him the invaluable lesson that hockey is "no place for a nervous person" (to quote a famous NHL announcer).
