Also known as The Inn, Austeria is set in Poland around the time of WWI. During a pogrom, a group of Jews seek refuge from the Cossacks. The fugitives hide out in a rural inn, terrified that they may be given away at any moment. As the seconds stretch into minutes and the minutes into hours, the film metamorphoses into a series of philosophical/psychological discussions in the tradition of The Lower Depths and No Exit. Austeria was the last film (to date) of Polish director Jerzy Kawalerowicz, whose previous projects have included the award-winning Joan of the Angels and Death of a President. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Within this culturally-centered tale of a Polish star-gazer obsessed with finding a new planet on the outskirts of the universe, lie allusions to the socio-political situation in Poland in the early 1980s that only a Pole at the time might fully understand. The story evolves around a tailor who is hospitalized for kidney problems and during a brief coma becomes convinced he was somehow joined to the distant stars. After he emerges from the hospital he talks the villagers into helping him build a major telescope, and his enthusiasm is contagious. For some reason, no one questions the fact that he has no training and no degree in astronomy -- until he starts getting a little static from the town elders when the Soviet Union does not like anyone outside of their space program taking unauthorized photos with a telescope (the first Sputnik was just sent up). The rude awakening will come when the tailor heads off to his first major astronomy conference, facing professionals for the first time. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

When a Polish fishing vessel sets out for a long-distance run to the Canary Islands, a crab gets caught in the nets as they are reeled in -- a bad omen for the coming voyage. Sure enough, once at the Islands, the sailors are told they have to stay at sea for a few months longer -- and each sailor has his own reaction to that unhappy news. One fisherman in particular has been thinking of his wife Joanna and her insistence that he give up his sea-faring life and find a job on solid land, near home. He weighs the desires of Joanna and the bad omen of the crab, against the profession he inherited from his father before him and is unable to work out a decision. Once he does reach home port, Joanna is there with an ultimatum, and the young fisherman must finally choose whether or not to break with the past. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

Zawada must find the thread that ties the cases together before he can track down the killer, yet the victims do not appear to share any traits. Meanwhile, the "mad dog" assassin is drawn to the funerals of his victims, a pattern that may one day get him in trouble. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi
