A family reunion staged to welcome an exiled relation turns out to be a study in tension and unpleasant feelings in this family drama. Thórdur (Gunnar Eyjólfsson) is the aging owner of a fishing business that has seen better days. Working alongside Thórdur is his oldest son, Haraldur (Sigurdur Skúlason), who is convinced the business is doomed unless they upgrade and update their equipment. Haraldur also has to deal with his outspoken wife, Áslaug (Elva Ósk Ólafsdóttir), who is convinced that both the business and their small Icelandic town are on their last legs. Meanwhile, Thórdur shares his home with Kristín (Kristbjorg Kjeld), who went from being his sister-in-law to his second wife; her daughter María (Nína Dögg Filippusdóttir); Thórdur's daughter, Ragnheidur (Gudrún Gísladóttir); her husband Morten (Sven Nordin); and Thórdur's often cranky mother, Kata (Herdís Thorvaldsdóttir). In the midst of all this family tension arrives Ágúst (Hilmir Snær Gudnason), Thórdur's youngest son, with his girlfriend Françoise (Hélène de Fougerolles) in tow. Ágúst has moved to Paris, where Thórdur has been helping his son pay for business school; however, Thórdur isn't aware that his son has quit school and wants to make a career for himself as a musician. Ágúst has also developed a bitter hatred of his former homeland, which hardly makes this family reunion any easier for the parties involved. Directed by Baltasar Kormákur, Hafid (aka The Sea) received its North American premier at the 2002 Toronto Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Love, honor, and Icelandic football are making life difficult for one aging slacker in this dark comedy. Toni (Thorhallur Sverrisson) is a thirty-something football fanatic whose desire to become wealthy has not been matched with a similar dedication to hard work or an abundance of ambition. Toni has an ex-wife, a daughter, and a girlfriend ten years his junior, none of whom share his overwhelming enthusiasm for football or video games, and all of whom wonder when Toni is going to make something of himself. Toni thinks he's finally found the perfect get-rich-quick scheme when he strikes up a deal to import Bulgarian Opal cigarettes in Iceland; business is slow at first, but when word spreads that the Opals have been doctored for greater potency, Toni soon has as much business he can handle, despite being subjected to frequent criticism about the health hazards of smoking. But bad news always seems to be around the corner for Toni, and it's hard to say what bothers him more -- legal problems that could put him out of business and into jail, his ex-wife's decision to move to America and take their daughter with her, or the news that his favorite football team is on a losing streak and about to be knocked down to second division status. Islenski Draumurinn was shot using digital video equipment, and while it was not produced in strict accordance with the Dogma 95 movement, director Róbert I. Douglas has cited the austerity of the Dogma style as an important influence on the film's look and feel. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

A young boy wandering with a band of gypsies is endangered when a royal proclamation grants people permission to shoot gypsies on sight. Benny Haag plays Inge and his twin brother Arild, the latter who fights with his father against the "undesirables." The father sends mercenaries to wipe out the gypsies, unaware his own son is among those slated to be executed when captured. The gypsies are portrayed as the heroes, while the blonde Swedes are clearly the enemy. Although this story takes place in the 16th century, parallels between the story and the intolerance of Swedes to foreign workers in the 1980s is evident. ~ Dan Pavlides, Rovi

Rioting over the installation of a U.S. nuclear base in Iceland is the backdrop for this story of romance based on a 1948 novel by Halldor Laxness. Ugla (Tinna Gunnlaughsdottir) is a good-looking young woman who has come into the city from the countryside and now works as a maid in the home of a famous politician. It does not take long for her to feel an attraction for the man even though he is married. In the meantime, she is studying music and her new friends at her music teacher's house are caring and sympathetic people, in contrast to the politician's aloof, elitist wife and children. Ugla cannot decide how, or when, or if, to approach the politician with her secret feelings for him. For most viewers, the development and the outcome of Ugla's dilemma are predictable, undercutting the drama that leads to her subsequent actions. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi
