A renegade doctor develops a biological weapon capable of transforming normal people into rampaging psychopaths, only to find his malevolent mutagen unexpectedly going airborne after the host carrying it is attacked by hungry vultures. Wronged by his government, benevolent scientist Dr. Vasilienko develops a "rage" virus with the power to spread chaos from coast to coast. Later, when one of the hosts is bitten by a flock of vultures, the scavenger birds mutate into winged monstrosities that prefer feasting on live flesh rather than leftovers. Just as the virus begins to spread across the countryside, a group of curious teens discover Dr. Vasilienko's top-secret lab. Now, as the flesh-eating freaks come out to feed, these terrified teens will be forced to fight for their lives or risk being eaten alive. A gay artist and telemarketer with a special knack for getting along well with children discovers just how closed-minded the suburbs can be when he attempts to find happiness after losing his godson in writer/director Peter Paige's affectionate, not-so-black comedy. Paul Johnson (Paige) is a Portland-based artist and telemarketer who loves nothing more in life than the time spent with his two-year-old godson, Morgan. Upon learning that his best friends the Fabers are moving to Japan and taking their son Morgan with them, Paul wallows in a state of deep denial that ultimately results in him missing the Fabers' departing flight. Encouraged by his good friend Russell (Anthony Clark) to get out of his house and spend more time with others, Paul soon ventures out to a local playground, where he finds comfort and joy in the youthful exuberance that surrounds him. When it comes to the concept of a grown homosexual spending time with young children, not everyone in the suburbs can be so accepting, though, and as Paul attempts to find ways of keeping himself surrounded by his pint-sized pals, nosy neighbor and disapproving mother Maggie Butler (Kathy Najimy) rallies a ready army of angry soccer moms to take action and keep Paul away from the local children. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

An amateur sleuth gets some help from her pets in this family-oriented mystery. Mary Haristeen (Ricki Lake), known to her friends as Harry, is the Post Mistress in a small Southern town; when she's not reading mystery novels, she tends to her cat, Mrs. Murphy (voice of Blythe Danner), and her dog, Tucker (voice of Anthony Clark). When handsome stranger Blair Bainbridge (Linden Ashby) moves in next door, Harry's friends try to play matchmaker, but Harry thinks something is not cricket about her new neighbor. Mrs. Murphy and Tucker, who share Harry's enthusiasm for solving whodunits, also think that something's not right, especially after Ben Seifert (Wayne Robson), a local banker, is found dead several days after being discovered in Blair's new home. Things don't look good for Blair, especially after it's learned that his ex-girlfriend died under mysterious circumstances, but local socialite Fitz-Gilbert Hamilton (Ed Begley Jr.) also has a few secrets he's not sharing. This made-for-TV drama, produced for the Wonderful World of Disney TV series, was based on characters from Rita Mae Brown's "Mrs. Murphy" mystery series. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Two couples share a home but not much else as they try to deal with the trials of parenthood in this half-hour situation comedy. Nerdy white-collar worker Greg Warner (Anthony Clark) and his wife Kim (Jean Louisa Kelly) are first-time parents learning to deal with the responsibilities of a new baby. While they get plenty of advice, they're not sure how much of it they should follow. They're sharing a home with Christine (Liza Snyder), Kim's sister, and her unemployed lout of a husband Jimmy (Mike O'Malley), who seem to think the best solution to any crisis is to park their two kids in front of the television and hope they forget what's bothering them. The sophomore film from former music video and commercial director Michael Bay, this fast-paced action yarn featured rapid-fire editing, a cutting-edge rock soundtrack and liberal use of shots awash in a haze of burnished hues, all trademarks of producers Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer. Nicolas Cage stars as Stanley Goodspeed, an FBI chemical weapons expert handed a unique assignment. Francis X. Hummel (Ed Harris), an insane Marine Corps general, has taken 81 tourists hostage on the abandoned island prison of Alcatraz. He and his men are threatening to bomb San Francisco with deadly gas unless $100 million is paid in war reparations to the families of servicemen killed in covert operations. Goodspeed is teamed with former British spy John Patrick Mason (Sean Connery), the only man ever to escape "The Rock," as well as a Navy SEAL team. When their military escorts are ambushed, it's up to odd couple Goodspeed and Mason to break into Alcatraz and stop Hummel. The Rock was the last film produced by Simpson, who died of a drug overdose before the film's release. It's the old switcheroo in this action comedy that follows the exploits of desperate extortionists. Gloria is a fluffhead with a Chinese dragon tattooed upon her chest. She wears lovely holograph earrings that just happen to contain classified detail of the U.S. space program. She is taken hostage by the bumbling extortionists and their leader Carl, former head of a freezer treat company. Unfortunately for them, Gloria accidently drowns in their pool when she tangles with a beach ball. Now the crooks must find a look-a-like for Gloria. They find her in Teresa, a college girl with a talent for mathematics. She is captured and tattooed. She soon escapes leading the crooks on a merry chase. A handful of up-and-coming songwriters discover that love is as difficult to navigate as the music business in this romantic comedy-drama from director Peter Bogdanovich. Miranda Presley (Samantha Mathis) is an aspiring singer/songwriter from New York City who loves country music and has decided to take her chances in Nashville, TN, where she hopes to strike it big as a musician. After arriving in the Music City after a long bus ride, Miranda makes her way to the Bluebird Café, a local watering hole with a reputation as a showcase for new talent. The bar's owner, Lucy (K.T. Oslin), takes a shine to the shy but plucky newcomer, and gives her a job as a waitress. Before long, Miranda has gotten to know a number of other Nashville transplants who are look looking to land a gig or sell a song, among them sweet and open-hearted Kyle Davidson (Dermot Mulroney), moody but talented James Wright (River Phoenix), and spunky Linda Lue Linden (Sandra Bullock). As the four friends struggle to find their place in the competitive Nashville music scene, both Kyle and James display a romantic interest in Miranda, while she finds it difficult to choose between the two. The Thing Called Love features cameos from a number of noted country performers, including Trisha Yearwood, Pam Tillis, Katy Moffatt, Jo-El Sonnier, and Jimmie Dale Gilmore. River Phoenix stars in this period drama about a young man, naive in some ways and worldly in others, who learns an important lesson about the nature of beauty. In the fall of 1963, Eddie Birdlace (River Phoenix) is an 18-year-old Marine Corps volunteer who is about to ship out with three of his buddies for a tour of duty in Viet Nam. Planning a massive blowout for their last night in San Francisco, Eddie, his buddies, and a number of other Marines set up a contest they call a "dog fight." Each man contributes $50 to the pot, and whoever can bring the ugliest date for their meeting that night at the bar wins the prize. Not having much luck finding a suitable contestant, Eddie finds a plain and slightly zaftig woman named Rose Feeney (Lili Taylor), who works in a coffeeshop and dreams of a career as a folk singer. Rose agrees to go out with Eddie, partly because she feels sorry for him, but as the evening wears on, Eddie finds himself growing fond of Rose and tries to worm his way out of taking her to the "party" he's told her so much about. When Rose learns the true nature of the contest, she is furious, not just for herself but for the other women who were cruelly and pointlessly humiliated; Eddie, severely chagrined, asks her out to dinner, hoping to somehow earn her forgiveness.
