Marcela Fernandez Violante directs the 1977 historical Western Cananea, based on the true story of the American-owned Cananea mine. Colonel William Greene ran the profitable copper mine in the Sonora desert, and the Mexican people who worked in the mines were exploited for their labor. This situation eventually led to the Mexican Revolution in 1910. The largest desert in North America, the Sonoran Valley was acquired by the U.S. after the Mexican-American War from 1846-1848. The low-lying area now covers parts of Arizona, California, and Mexico. Starring José Carlos Ruiz, Carlos Bracho, Milton Rodriguez, and Yolanda Ciani. Cananea was released on DVD in 2004 as part of the Latin Cinema Collection from Desert Mountain Media. ~ Andrea LeVasseur, Rovi
Departamento de Soltero concerns a womanizer who decides to take a wife. Unable to completely stop his wonton ways, the man takes a lover after the wedding. When the wife discovers the tryst, she makes contact with the lover. The two meet and decide on an elaborate plan to give the husband his proper comeuppance. ~ Perry Seibert, Rovi
A movie about a popular singer's painful search for her lost son, with songs by Lamarque and Lico. ~ Rovi
Mexican comic "El Clavillazo," otherwise known as Antonio Espino stars in this film by José Morales-Díaz, yet another comedy in which Clavillazo plays himself, not unusual for many comedians. The title could be understood as referring to the U.S. since anything "north" in Mexican parlance has that connotation -- and the story is a parody of a Western. Clavillazo takes on the role of a sharp-shooting outlaw in the vein of a Jesse James or similar legends from the wild West. The script is too weak to sustain the talents of the cast, which counts famous singer Javier Solis among its number. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

- El Clavillazo, Javier Solis, (more)
