Cristian Galaz's The Sentimental Teaser is an episode film with three parts. The first section concerns Juan (Daniel Munoz), a student who spends time impersonating John Lennon, and his involvement with his married neighbor Claudia (Lorene Prieto). The middle story involves Carmen (Ximena Rivas), who discovers unpleasant truths about her family when, as an adult, she spies on her sister from a secret hiding space she used as a child. The final portion of the film is about a husband and wife (Pablo Montoya and Tamara Acosta) who, due to their social conditions, have no privacy. At the time of its release, The Sentimental Teaser was the most successful film in Chilean history. ~ Perry Seibert, Rovi

Three old friends get together for a get-rich-quick scheme that stubbornly refuses to go as planned in this comedy from Chilean filmmaker Ricardo Carrasco Farfan. El Negro (Sergio Hernandez) grew up in a small village in Chile, only to move away in hopes of finding success in Santiago; after the death of his mother, he returns home for the first time in years to attend the funeral, though his loss doesn't appear to have had much of an impact on him. After the funeral, El Negro runs into a pair of old friends -- Guaton Molina (Emilio Garcia) and Chico Mario (Luis Dubo) -- who offer to bring him in on a slightly shady business deal they've been planning. Molina and Mario plan to head out to the seaside, buy a large supply of fresh seafood, and sell it in town during Holy Week at a substantial profit. El Negro agrees to help, kicking in both some needed cash and the use of his truck, but as soon as they put their plan into motion, the three pals find themselves followed by a strange combination of both good and bad luck. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Following up on his acclaimed 1999 opus Revenge, Andres Wood spins this wild and woolly comedy about sex, greed, and shellfish. Loco is an endangered shellfish found most abundantly in a remote corner of Chile. Resembling a clam, the creature is touted for its aphrodisiac qualities, making it extremely popular among lecherous old men in Japan. Just before the annual harvest, a pair of con artists, Canuto (Emilio Bardi) and Jorge (Luis Dubo), return to their hometown claiming to represent a fictitious Japanese company. Announcing their intention to pay top peso for the entire loco crop, the villagers are soon desperately trying to gather as much of the shellfish as they can. As news of the gold rush leaks out, a band of carpetbagger whores drops in, hoping to cash in on the locals. The cash is placed under the protection of the town's priest/mayor/radio DJ (Luis Margani) who valiantly tries to instill some order in a town increasingly slipping into a carnal quagmire. As Canuto and Jorge are about to switch the cash with counterfeit money, they fall into amorous traps of their own -- Canuto falls in with an old flame named Sonia while Jorge finds his true love. This film was screened at the 2001 Toronto Film Festival. ~ Jonathan Crow, Rovi

In a story with a good premise, a man who has been hiding in a cave for 40 years decides he is finally ready to come out and re-integrate himself into village life. He went into hiding to escape the harsh rule of the fascist dictator Francisco Franco. After Franco dies in 1975, the cave-dweller feels it's safe to emerge, though he is not at all prepared for modern Spain. Meanwhile, friends inform his wife that she may no longer be eligible for a pension because her husband is alive while others wonder if he really is her husband. These considerations are almost enough to drive the man back into the cave again. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi
