Actor Jordi Mollà made his directorial debut with this satiric drama, which casts a jaundiced eye on the world of television. Salva (Mollà) and his best friend, Angel (Juan Carlos Vellido), are a pair of homeless men who scrape together a living begging in a train station. After the men are implicated in the killing of a priest, Salva and Angel are put behind bars, where they are spotted by the producer of "Harsh Treatment," a reality television show in which the viewing audience is asked to judge if the contestants are innocent or guilty of the crimes of which they are accused. With his long hair and kind eyes, Salva looks a bit like Jesus, and Bigardo (Daniel Giménez Cacho), the creator of the show, decided to play the resemblance for all it's worth; the home audience not only acquits Salva, but he's given a new job as a TV preacher. Disillusioned, Angel goes back to the gutter, while Salva, who is uncertainly navigating the ladder of success, becomes deeply infatuated with Espe (Candela Peña), Bigardo's significant other. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Reactions to this political drama with a rightist slant will depend on the viewer's own politics. Late director Rafael Gil begins with an ingenious premise. A novice reporter mistakes the news that the French franc (franco in Spanish) has resuscitated for the news that dead fascist dictator, Francisco Franco has come back from the grave. Buried for three years now, this is not likely but it sets off a series of extreme reactions in many sectors of society. At the same time there is an old man who just might be the resuscitated dictator hitchhiking away from the cemetery that holds his tomb. As some leaders either run off or air out their fascist uniforms, bombs are exploded in the streets, bank robbers rob with impunity, and a group of villagers thinks that the army on maneuvers in their neighborhood is actually the fascist army returning in glory. Sooner or later, people will realize that Franco is truly dead, though fascism may not be as moribund. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

Carlos Saura wrote and directed this powerful psychological drama in which family crises which reflect the embattled soul of a nation are seen through the eyes of an unusually perceptive child. Ana (Ana Torrent) is an eight-year-old girl growing up in a troubled household -- her father Anselmo (Hector Alterio) is a general in the Spanish military during the waning days of Franco's repressive regime, and her mother (Geraldine Chaplin) is dead, Ana having witnessed her agonizing final moments. Anna, her older sister Irene (Conchita Perez) and younger sister Juana (Maite Sanchez) are looked after by their emotionally chilly Aunt Paulina (Monica Randall), while housekeeper Rosa (Florinda Chico) provides what little warmth there is to be found in the household. While Ana's mother is gone, the girl frequently sees and hears her mother's spirit, and is convinced Anselmo's emotional neglect and infidelity is responsible for her death, leading the youngster to take her own form of revenge against her father. The title Cria Cuervos is taken from a Spanish proverb -- "Raise ravens and they'll pluck out your eyes." The film was originally released in the United States under title Cria!, and has been screened in English-speaking territories as Raise Ravens and The Secret of Ana. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
