Set amidst a backdrop of political unrest and oppression in Argentina following the coup of the late 1980s, this impressive drama dwells upon a May-December love affair between a boy and a woman suspected of political subversion. When seventeen-year-old Pedro defiantly befriends political fugitive Sofia and provides her shelter, he creates a deep rift between himself, his family and his friends. Sofia is hunted because she was at one time in love with a Communist sympathizer. At first the relationship is purely platonic as Pedro helps her recover from a 23-day long flight that has left Sofia weak and starving for sleep. But as time passes, Pedro becomes increasingly involved with her and his schoolwork begins to suffer. Gradually he falls in love with her and she with him. But as the political situation grows more oppressive and the government steps up its search for subversives, the two begin making desperate plans to flee the country. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi

In this Argentine comedy-drama, a lonely, aging and never-married woman lives all alone in her late father's musty mansion. One day she calls a plumber to fix a toilet. He is a bungler and nearly destroys her home, all the while making rather vulgar passes at her. She finds a certain charm in the braggadocio boob, and so when he tells her that he is going to enter a bicycle race, she offers to support his training. She then buys him a bike and lets him work out in her house. Things are well until a low-life buddy suggests that he sleep with the judge's wife to ensure a win. The young man tries, but simply cannot go through with the seduction. Unfortunately, the spinster, who returns home and finds them, doesn't know this and jealously gives him the boot. He then suffers more humiliation when he loses the race and slowly wobbles into the finish line. Fortunately, the forgiving woman is there to cheer him on. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi

In a sudsy rendition of the melodramatic turmoil of a doctor's personal life, this routine story focuses on the good doctor -- Carlos Ventura (Luis Brandoni) and his principle patient, a young man hit by a car and so badly hurt that the other doctors gave him up for dead. Ventura pours his knowledge and skill into saving the young man, partly as a means of forgetting the fact that his wife has just left him and that his son thinks he is a cold fish. Needless to say, the young patient miraculously works his way back into reasonable health after several months -- but can that do anything for the doctor's problems on the home front? ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

In this talkative story about the elite of Uruguay, a wealthy patriarch is troubled by his workers and especially by one son Ramón (Victor Laplace). Ramón and his wife do not get along well, nor does Ramón like his brother very much; he is also having an affair and has some sort of special relationship going on with his father's mistress -- no wonder Ramon's life is spinning out of control, like the film in some ways. Characters tend to be a bit shallow, making it difficult to become involved with the autocratic father and his family. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

One of the women is married to a wealthy man and moves in the elite circles of Buenos Aires, the other is married to an average Joe. After the three get together, they quickly come to the obvious realization that they are all strong-willed and in serious disagreement. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

An uneven love story with good acting that helps sustain interest, Mis Dias con Veronica features a September-May relationship in which the woman has more going for her than her younger lover. Veronica (Dora Baret) is forty-two and a sensible, forthright person who has a fairly good grip on the world around her. Her co-worker and eventual lover (Oscar Cruz) is thirty-two and has not yet had the time to develop her insight, if he ever will. The progress of their love affair occupies center stage, with the problems of their boss (Hector Bidonde) adding to the mix. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

It is not widely known that Argentina, which is thought to have harbored many ex-Nazis (such as Josef Mengele), is also the home of a large and well-established population of Jews who fled the pogroms of Russia near the turn of the century and settled in the Argentine countryside. This film tells the story of those early settlers, many of them new to farm work and all of them new to the horse-riding traditions of the region's cowboys ("gauchos"). Based on the book by Alberto Gerchunoff who was one of these immigrants. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi
