In this romance, two teenagers who are good friends have decided to attend a party for the sole purpose of finding love. For Sasha, this really does mean high romance, a meeting of intellect and heart within a container of loyalty and fidelity. For Vadim, love means someone to share your bed with. Both boys find what they are looking for, though Vadim's order is much easier to fill. In Sasha's case, he has fallen for a Jewish girl whose family is contemplating emigration to Israel because of a series of anti-Semitic phone calls. Furthermore, his girl's family doesn't want her to marry a non-Jew. To prove his love, he begins investigating the offending phone calls. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

The darts thrown at the morally inept upper classes in this drama from Latvian director Ianas Streitch are a little blunted, and the halos of the underprivileged just slightly tarnished. Seventeen-year-old Marite (Zane Ianchevska) is a rustic innocent who takes a job working for a formerly wealthy farming family, still doing fairly well. The father of the family is an arrogant yet doddering old man, his son is a simpleton, his daughter is haughty, and his young wife is having an affair with a farmhand, Antanas (Alguirdas Paulavitchus). The entire lot is one large pain to the timid Marite who finds their behavior hard to bear. The household relationships soon come to a head when Antanas -- who aims to be the next patriarch here -- gets the daughter pregnant and assumes he will simply marry her and take over. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

Set during the end of WW II, a young woman falls in love with a soldier returning from war. Having been abandoned by her husband, she is left to raise three young children on her own. The soldier tries to convince her to bring her children and live with him -- which she finally agrees to.
