Director Jorge Ali Triana attacks political corruption and historical accuracy in entertainment in his satirical 2002 film Bolivar Is Me. Actor Santiago Miranda (Robinson Diaz) is cast in a Latin American television miniseries chronicling the legendary revolutionary Simon Bolivar's life. The hyper-sensitive actor -- whose mental well-being was already questionable -- snaps when forced to perform a revisionist version of Santiago's death. As the actor angrily leaves the set, he also takes leave of his senses and believes himself to actually be Bolivar. Furthermore, he assumes Bolivar's mission to unite Latin America -- which shocks his producers and provides a rather unexpected opportunity for the local political leaders. Bolivar Is Me was viewed at the 2002 Los Angeles Latino Film Festival. ~ Ryan Shriver, Rovi

Italian director Paolo Agazzi spins this deft, witty fable about rural life in Bolivia. The film opens with a traveling actor being discovered making love to the wife of a local bigwig on stage. Years later, the bereaved big shot is so afraid that he is going to lose his gorgeous daughter Celeste (Maria Laura Garcia) the same way he lost his wife that he has literally chained her to the house. Meanwhile, local author Oscar (Gustavo Angarita) is fascinated with a newly-arrived stranger, Abelardo (Dario Grandinetti), who has brought with him an entire broadcast system. Soon the sleepy town has its first taste of the media. Later, as the radio broadcasts start to cause chaos, both Abelardo and Oscar fall for Celeste. ~ Jonathan Crow, Rovi

This Colombian ensemble comedy, scathingly examines violence and official corruption in the tumultuous Latin American country. The story is told in flashback. In Colombia there is a law that states if an abandoned estate is occupied by squatters for a certain period of time, the land becomes theirs by default ( at the turn of the century, many wealthy landowners left their farms as the country became urbanized). The law becomes the basis of conflict when the original owners of the 48 room mansion the Olive House, aka "The Coop" by the squatters, come to reclaim it. The squatters there resist. A lawyer delays the eviction. Meanwhile a former theatrical stage manager devises an ingenious plot. The tenants, using pulleys and levers, take apart the house leaving only the facade. As they work, the personal quirks of each squatter and his or her relationship with the others are revealed. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi

Based on the novel by renowned author Gabriel Garcia-Marquez, who also wrote the screenplay, this is a compelling tragedy about the return of a convicted killer to his native village 18 years after his crime. Juan Sayago (Gustavo Angarita) has served his sentence for the murder he committed and comes back home, knowing full well that the victim's sons will carry out their own retribution. Juan refuses to leave, even when others shun him. Ancient customs and local traits fill the story with dimensions that prod the conscience and give pause for thought. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi
