Few states can even come close to rivaling the rich musical heritage of Louisiana. From country to rock & roll to Cajun to zydeco to jazz, and on and on, the roots of American music are in Louisiana. This documentary from director Michael Murphy takes a look at the state's rhythmic history and features live performances by the likes of Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown, Buckwheat Zydeco, the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, the Neville Brothers, and many others. ~ Matthew Tobey, Rovi
This lively documentary takes the viewer deep into the Cajun and Zydeco musical world of Louisiana, and features interviews and performances from some of the best known musicians, as it traces the history of both musical forms using archival footage from the 1930s onward. That history is inextricably intertwined with the history of the people who settled Louisiana, and the documentary illuminates that story with interviews from historians and folklore specialists. Among the many musicians featured are Clifton Chenier, Queen Ida, and Wayne Toups. These two musical forms were almost obliterated by the influx of U.S. popular music when rural Louisiana became less isolated after World War Two, but they underwent a revival in the 1960's which has continued to this day. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

Clifton Chenier was the undisputed king of zydeco, the Louisiana-bred mixture of blues and Cajun music. With his pumping accordion, manic French vocals and top-notch band, Chenier could set a crowd to dancing like few performers before or since, and this home-video release captures him in his element. Clifton Chenier: The King of Zydeco includes footage from the 1982 San Francisco Blues Festival and the 1978 New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, as well as rare videotapes of Chenier and his band appearing on a French-language television broadcast from an independent Lafayette, LA, TV station. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
