A landmark of the nascent Hong Kong New Wave of the early '80s, this melodrama -- directed by Ann Hui -- concerns the plight of Vietnamese peasants shortly after the fall of Saigon. The film centers on a Japanese photojournalist named Shiomi Akutagawa (George Lam Chi-cheung) who ventures to Danang to document Vietnam's attempts at rebuilding after the war. At first he's bussed around by government officials showing off quaint villages and happy, healthy children. Later, he manages to get permission to wander about the countryside without a government chaperon. Soon he happens upon a young lass named Cam Nuong (Season Ma Si-san) who is from a desperately poor family. At first she is suspicious and even hostile towards the foreigner but quickly they develop a bond of sorts. As Akutagawa starts seeing Vietnam through Cam Nuong's eyes, he starts to realize that everyday life is far different from the state propaganda. Villagers live in constant terror of marauding soldiers, and children scavenge the bodies of executed prisoners for valuables. This film, which was shot in Mainland China, garnered armloads of Hong Kong Film Awards including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Screenplay. This film also launched the career of future pop icon and movie star Andy Lau. ~ Jonathan Crow, Rovi

The Chinese title for this actioner means "unable to hear speech" and it's about Ah Yeung (Ma Sisan), a deaf-mute who leads a gang of equally mute pickpockets in Hong Kong. After an angry young man gets out of prison, he befriends Ah Yeung but their innocent relationship soon leads to violence and gang warfare. This bullet-ridden film, unusually bloody and claiming a high body count, bears a basic premise with a more noble intent than most Hong Kong action fare despite the many on-screen casualties. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

Carrie Ng Kar-lai stars in this gritty women-behind-bars flick directed by Raymond Leung Pan-hei. Withdrawn young lass Yuk (Season Ma Si-san) winds up in prison for six months after taking a drug possession rap for her no-good boyfriend. She is saved from notorious lesbian mobster "He-man" and her associates by Winnie Wong (Ng), a vicious street-hardened con who takes Yuk under her wing. In a series of flashbacks, it is learned that Winnie was a junkie prostitute who fell in love with an undercover cop. When his cover was blown and he was executed by the triads, she went on a crazed killing spree. Now the associates of the gangsters she killed are pressuring Yuk to rub her out. ~ Jonathan Crow, Rovi

In 1969, while Hong Kong is undergoing its own localized chaos -- fallout from the Cultural Revolution on the Chinese mainland -- taxi driver Ah-chung is hard-pressed to juggle the two women in his life and his ambition to own his own cab. One of the women is a wealthy socialite who pays for his intimate attentions. The other is his real girlfriend who, despite herself, is drawn to him. What's the problem? The girlfriend is ambitious too: she wants to land someone with real money, not just a hard-working cab driver. One highlight of this light-hearted romantic comedy is its use of music from the period. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi
