A disparate, small group of smugglers try to expand their income by carrying illegal cargo across the French-Swiss border in this routine tale of life on the shady side. Paul (Hugues Quester) works as a mechanic in his father's car repair shop, but he makes extra cash by smuggling goods and people across the border. He dreams of getting his pilot's license and going to Canada to work. Mali (Berry Berr) works in a factory and smuggles narcotics across the border for extra lucre. Finally, Jean (Jean-Philippe Ecoffey) works on his father's farm and is not at all interested in smuggling until he meets Mali. After he agrees to help Paul smuggle some gold into Switzerland, he has no idea that Paul realizes the police are hot on his trail. The results are disastrous. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

In a melancholy and well-photographed tale, a Portuguese family is in mourning over the loss of one of their sons, a young man who was killed in Mozambique. During the mid-1970s, Mozambique rebelled against 450 years of Portuguese colonial domination and after much bloodshed, independence was declared in June, 1975. Black-and-white footage dramatizes that conflict. Now ten years have gone by, and the mother still cannot forget her dead son, though the topic of the war has long been dropped from conversations. She and her husband go to visit their younger son in Lisbon, and as events unfold, it becomes apparent that all these issues have taken their toll on the mother's health and psyche. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

Gaps appear in this disjointed story about two generations of losers, the older generation depressed because none of their dreams have been realized, and the younger actively suicidal in their flirtation with danger, death, and drugs. There are many scenes of the younger set shooting up, and the older generation is, in one instance at least, too jaded to care. If these messages were not bad enough, then the gaps in the action that leave the audience wondering "whatever happened to..." finish the film off. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

In this Portuguese political thriller, identifying who is doing what to whom becomes something of a problem. Lucia (Maria Cabral) is an aristocrat who has broken with her family and is dabbling at revolution and bohemianism. At one point, she forms an attachment with Francesco (Paco Nieto), a young revolutionary who does some smuggling on the side. He decides to try to visit her to rekindle their romance and in doing so runs afoul of an unidentified cabal. He dies without ever seeing Lucia, and news of his death sends her back into the arms of her family. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi
