Popular Mexican star Elvira Quintana is featured in this tortilla Western as a female with power and influence who joins up with others to fight corruption in their town. Chief bad guy (Carlos Lopez-Moctezuma) is doubly villainous because he poses as an upstanding citizen, a posturing that fools everyone for awhile. But paraphrasing one of the presidents from that large country to the north, you can't fool all of the people all of the time. Sure enough, the hypocritical citizen is unmasked along with a cohort or two. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

This well-balanced film is based on the life of Jose Mojica (Pedro Geraldo), a Mexican entertainer who gave up the stage for a monk's robe and tonsure. As young Mojica's star is rising in the entertainment world he indulges in some very unpleasant personality traits -- a serious ego, arrogance, and unstable temperament plague his relationships. But then circumstances conspire to slowly wake him up, not only making him realize the errors in his attitude and behavior, but bringing him even further to the conclusion that nothing the material world has to offer is worth it. And so Mojica becomes a Friar, a monk whose life starts to touch others in a meaningful way. Libertad Lamarque plays his mother and equally famous Pedro Armendariz plays a man affected by Mojica. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

This odd little film plays like a Mexican variant on the goofy serial Phantom Empire (which pitted singing cowboy Gene Autry against death-ray-wielding subterranean villains). Gaucho star Gaston Santos rides out to do battle with a rubbery swamp monster, avenge his father's death, and rescue the girl -- all while belting out a few snappy musical numbers. This muddled mix is rendered even more senseless by the domestic repackaging of producer Gordon Murray, who had new scenes shot featuring painfully unfunny attempts at comic relief -- which really wasn't necessary to begin with, considering the inherent lunacy of the original. Released in the U.S. as Swamp of the Lost Monsters. ~ Cavett Binion, Rovi

The beloved Mexican funnyman Cantinflas stars in this comedy as a shoeshine man who, after the death of his best friend and fellow bootblack, is put in charge of arranging the man's funeral and caring for his young son. Needing to raise some money, the shoeshine man tries to get work at a night club, but his eccentric dance act soon raises the ire of Raquel, the club's star dancer, and Cantinflas is sent packing. He next tries his luck as a life guard at a luxurious resort hotel in Acapulco, though when he gets his first emergency call, it soon becomes obvious that he doesn't know the first thing about rescuing swimmers. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
