Au Clair de la Lune is hardly "something for everybody", which is its chief source of interest. The stars are Guy L'Ecuyer and Michel Cote, who cowrote the script with director Andre Forcier. L'Ecuyer plays a blue-collar Joe whose sole passion in life is bowling. We won't tell you how, but L'Ecuyer forms a strong bond with Cote, who plays a gay albino. Filmed in Quebec, Au Clair de La Lune was released below the border with English subtitles. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Five terminally ill patients inside the cancer ward of one hospital are the subject of this fictional accounting of different stances in front of the specter of imminent death. Whereas a middle-aged man and woman derive strength and comfort from each other, another young man is driven to suicide after saying a final farewell to his family and friends. The stories about each of the patients are introduced in the staff meetings at the hospital, in which each of the five cases is brought up in sequence. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

This Canadian film stars Marcel Sabourin as J. A. Martin, journeyman photographer. Several times per year, Martin packs his bulky equipment and goes on the road in search of photogenic subjects, leaving his wife (Monique Mercure) behind. On this occasion, however, Mme. Martin insists upon accompanying her husband. She soon discovers that the truculent, inner-directed M. Martin may have been making ooh-la-la with some of his more attractive female portrait subjects. Director Jean Beaudrin adds a dash of topicality to J.A. Martin, Photographer with some genteel lobbying in favor of Quebec's Separatist movement. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

This award-winning film reveals the conflicts in the lives of three French Canadian men in a hunting party. One of the men, the least successful with women, is not physically up to the trip; he is overweight and drinks too much. He tries to mask his embarrassment with humor and is generally a good sport. Another, who brought his young son along, slows up their progress by conducting an affair with a waitress. The last, and least sensitive of the group, also has a fling with a waitress. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

Although he is something of a layabout, and is still living with his mother, her death comes as something of a shock to Louis Pelletier (Gilbert Sicotte). Still, he has hopes of some sort of legacy and believes that his relatives will help him find a job. All his hopes are dashed when, before the funeral, his three aunts come to Quebec City to settle their sister's estate. As grasping and efficient a crew as ever strode a parlor, by the time they leave, the estate has been cleaned to the bones, as if by vultures. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

Strict behavior codes and the struggle to eke out a living provide a backdrop to this romantic drama set at the turn of the 20th century in rural, northern Quebec. Maria Chapdelaine (Carole Laure) returns to the home of her parents in a remote village, and during the period of one year, has her heart-strings pulled in three different directions at once -- though only one of those directions is what she really wants. She had been promised in marriage to the shy neighboring farmer (Pierre Curzi), whom she has known since they were children, but a suave man-about-town wants to marry her (Donald Lautrec), and a handsome trapper (Nick Mancuso) has fallen in love with her. Maria fluctuates between the trapper and the urban aristocrat, and as events unfold, her indecision leads to tragic consequences. Also filmed by Julien Duvivier in 1934, this story first became popular when published as a novel (by Louis Hemon) in 1913. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

This well-wrought family comedy-drama by director Max Fischer is set in Holland during World War II. Young David (Brett Marx) has been separated from his parents because they were taken prisoner by the Nazis and sent away to a concentration camp. David ends up living on a Rotterdam farm as one of their workers and spends his time as best he can. He has always been entranced by American westerns and this infatuation gives him a certain confidence when it is most needed. David is inspired by his screen idols when he sees a chance to capture Colonel Gluck (Rod Steiger), an officer in the German army. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

Non-Quebecois may find this French language comedy somewhat inscrutable, as it contains many local references and in-jokes. The story concerns two incredibly primitive backwoods types. These men have just been released from prison for kidnapping the local police chief's daughter but still have a hankering for a woman. When they return to their campsite, they discover a woodland nymph whom they both bed and who drives them wild. Jealousy nearly destroys their relationship, but after they have come to blows over her, they discover she has left. This film is mildly pornographic, as it has nudity and depicts sexual situations. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi
