Inspired by true events, Amnesie: L'Enigme James Brighton tells the story of James Brighton, an American man found naked in a Montreal parking lot with no memory of who he is besides his name, and the fact that he is gay. A gay advocacy group launches a campaign to track down James' identity, and police administer numerous medical tests to uncover the root of his amnesia but after three months, there is no information either on James' identity, or on the cause of his memory loss. Finally, a family from Tennessee recognizes James' face from the media and comes forward claim him -- except his name isn't James Brighton, it's Matthew Honeycutt. The young man was soon arrested for committing fraud by faking his amnesia, but many remain uncertain about the truth behind Honeycutt's claims. Alex (Roy Dupuis) has a deeply troubled mind. He also has a seriously dysfunctional - not to say incestuous - family. Why then, has he returned from his merchant seaman job to the rocky coasts of his home? Perhaps he couldn't cut manage to march in his father's footsteps in that job. His mother (Andree Lachapelle) doesn't seem to mind, and lets him stay at her bed and breakfast hotel. In this melodramatic French Canadian comedy-drama, a sexy male escort sashays into the living room and life of a gay man and proves to be the catalyst for turmoil. Until Steve showed up to strip as a birthday present, the life of lovers Jean-Marc and Phillipe had settled into a comfortable but passionless rut. Jean-Marc is alone at the time and has sex with Steve. Later that night, Steve tries to change a light bulb and falls, causing his friends to jump to the conclusion that he tried to kill himself. Soon Phillipe too gets involved with Steve. Finding Steve a tonic to his doldrums, Phillipe begins pursuing a real relationship with him. Steve then proves to be a troubled character who is involved secretly with another man who has been diagnosed with HIV. The problem stems from the fact that the mystery lover is none other than Phillipe's dearest friend. Police detective Jacques Laniel's life becomes a nightmare the day drive-by shootists gun down his partner Thomas Colin. His colleagues make matters worse by blaming him for the death, and after his wife leaves him, Laniel decides to quit the force and launch a private investigation into Colin's murder. Soon afterward, Laniel finds the bullet-riddled body of famed author and literature professor Zachary Osborne tied to his car hood. The professor's wife hires Laniel to solve the murder, but what the detective finds is ugly: Osborne was a part of a lucrative land-speculation deal that involved the sale of a crumbling old rectory that had been turned into a halfway house called the Haven of the Monsters. The name is apt, for all the residents are convicted killers who were given inordinately light sentences. Up to this point in the plot, the film has been a standard crime thriller. But when Lanier starts questioning the Haven's tenants and their crimes are revealed via flashback, it takes on the character of a David Lynch production. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi

At first this seems an unequivocal blessing, but it seems that she has chosen to hound and harangue him during their once-a-week meetings.
