This is an unconvincing police drama about an inspector (Peter Fleischmann, also the director) who loses his grip on the rational world when he becomes emotionally involved with the worse kind of murderess -- a woman who killed her own child. The inspector normally tracks down the motivation for the crimes he must solve, so when the female killer shows no remorse for what she did, he becomes more and more involved in her case -- to the point of almost completely abandoning his wife and family. Eventually, the woman is sent to a mental clinic, while the inspector is determined to get her out, no matter what. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

Doktor Faustus was adapted from Thomas Mann's epic novel of the same name about a composer, Adrian Leverkuehn (Jon Finch), who sells his soul to the devil for the acquisition of genius in his lifetime. Leverkuehn intentionally contracts syphilis from an infected prostitute because he believes that a side-effect of the disease is intense, sustained creativity; no matter that death from syphilis as it enters the brain is extremely unpleasant -- the composer wants his moment of greatness. That is where Satan comes into the picture, and Leverkuehn agrees to Satan's terms in exchange for creative genius: he is not to have any close human contacts. Being only too human, the composer violates the terms only to see his two closest friends, a cellist and his little nephew, die as a consequence. At this point, after extensive philosophizing and rumination, the Satanic deal just does not have the same allure, and Leverkuehn's own life is quickly deteriorating, much faster than he can handle. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

His twin brother Taft went to Africa and struck it rich, and the two have not seen each other for 40 years. They include taking care of a monkey, spending three weeks in jail, and letting the students pass the rest of their tests. In this comedy, set in an Austrian mountain village, the town leaders conspire to attract tourists by touting a mythical "fountain of love" that runs nearby the village. When the minister of tourism discovers this, she immediately sends her agents to check out the veracity of the potentially scandalous water. After the village mayor declares a 3-day ban on sexual activity, he then plugs up the fountain. When the agents come, they find nothing. One of the agents wants to have his boss come and check it out personally, but changes his mind after he drinks some of the water. It really is an aphrodisiac!
