Carmen la de Triana (1938)

Carmen la de Triana (1938)
Member Rating:
It was Andalusiche Naechte in Germany and Andalusian Nights in England, but this German romantic melodrama was actually the umpteenth adaptation of Prosper Merimee's Carmen. Imperio Argentina stars as the voluptuous gypsy temptress Carmen, who brings disgrace and ruin to the one man she truly loves. Friedrich Benfer co-stars as Don José, who sacrifices everything for the love of Carmen, only to realize in the end that he's lost her as well. The final scene departs radically from Bizet's opera version of the Merimee original, with a chastened Carmen standing by the grave of Don José, who by surrendering his life has found redemption. Andalusiche Naechte was clearly designed for the South American market, which remained receptive to German films even during the War years. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
