À Toute Vitesse (1996)
Member Rating:
French auteur Gael Morel pays tribute to the rush associated with reaching the age of 20 in this fast-paced, sexually charged drama. During the prologue, teen Samir and his best friend Rick rub bloody fingers together as they make a blood-brother's pact. Suddenly a shot rings out and Rick dies of a bullet wound in Samir's arms. Time passes and Algeria-born Samir feels uncomfortable about his cultural background. Meanwhile, university student Julie is upset to hear that her boyfriend Quentin has just signed a contract to publish his first book and move to Paris. It doesn't help that his book is a barely disguised chronicle of his friends' activities. Quentin meets the blatantly homosexual Samir at a party one night. Interested in finding more fodder for a second book, he gets Samir to tell about his intimate relationship with the late Rick. It's difficult, but Samir complies even as he finds himself increasingly attracted to Quentin, who rejects him point blank. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi

If you like Stephane Rideau then this is a "NOT MISS". Very affectionate and smart film. The characters are not well developed but you do end up caring what happens to them to the heartbreaking ending. Nice cinematography, and great acting. See it

I will admit that this movie leaves me somewhat cold. I thought it would recap the life of Samir and Rick, but no. It seems (to me at least) go off on tagents in order to state political and social imperatives. Also, the girl (Julie) dominates the plot at the expense of both Jimmy and Quintin. The script never explains the angst of Jimmy and his true feelings for Quintin. Also, Quintin seems more like an intrusion in the lives of the other characters, as they go about trrying to resolve their relationships. As I gingerly leave the mine-field of 'interpetation' a better script and direction could have made this into a great movie. 04/29/10

Character development poor. This is the second movie I've seen that depicts life in that part of the world. So much is understated and yet understood quietly........... "let's live this lie, until someone wakes us up and say's it's time to go, the movie is over". I'm sure there are more movies out there like this but they do get and hold your attention. The first one you see..."this is stupid, why live this lie". Then you realize through another tale, this life style has probably been going on long before America was discovered and we are the stupid ones. I thought language was the most major difference between nationalities...wake up, coffee done.
