Nick of Time (1995)
Member Rating:
A stranger pulled into a deadly scheme races against time to save his daughter in this thriller. Gene Watson (Johnny Depp) is an accountant who comes to L.A. with his ten-year-old daughter Lynn (Courtney Chase) to attend a funeral. On the street, Gene and Lynn are pulled aside by Mr. Smith (Christopher Walken) and Ms. Jones (Roma Maffia), who flash what look like police badges and usher them into a van. Gene soon discovers that he's been kidnapped, and his captors have an unusual demand -- if Gene does not murder Gov. Eleanor Grant (Marsha Mason) within 75 minutes, his daughter will be killed. Gene now has just an hour and a quarter to tip off the authorities, spare Gov. Grant, and find out what Smith and Jones are trying to do, along with saving his daughter's life. He finds a much-needed ally in one-legged shoe-shine man Huey (Charles S. Dutton). Most of the action in Nick of Time occurs in "real time," meaning that the passage of time on screen matches that of real life, as the frequent shots of clocks and watches will attest. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

This was good not great, but Christopher Walken's performance is what made this most enjoyable for me. It had it's exciting moments though it was growing old on me fast, but then Walken would enter the scene and kick it back up a notch. He's a bad (very bad) guy with Roma Maffia as his side kick (kinda like Boris and Natasha) and they find Depp's character who is an accountant traveling with his daughter in an airport. They hijack him so to speak and hand him a gun and tell him to go kill the governer - or his little girl is dead - heh- heh- hehhhhhhhhh. Tic-toc the clock is ticking and he only has so much time to do it.

The movie was good as far as acting and characters but the plot is just plain unbelievable, even for pre 9-11 times. The scope of and ease in which the villans exist and move about are more in tune with a St. Nick kids movie than in this Nick of Time movie.

Johnny Depp does well in this rather "normal" character. The story is pretty good and holds your interest to the end. I love Johnny Depp's work! This is the most "normal" role I have seen him in - with "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" being at the other end of the spectrum at BIZZARE! But then there are a lot of actors that would have done a good job in this film. I like the fact that Johnny's characters are not ordinary and are all just a bit "different". This isn't Johnny Depp as we've come to know him and love him, but its good too.
