Fascinating and entertaining character study of family dynamics and how the issues of a father and mother show up in their children and how one child seeks to overcome these traits in herself and break free into a new life. I LOVED this movie. So well done, extremely funny and ultimately thought-provoking. I highly recommend it. Great performances from the entire cast.

Outstanding in every regard, this Aussie comedy with profound life lessons, realistic dysfunctional families and female friendships as compelling as those in "Sex in the City" has retained every ounce of impact I felt when I saw it over ten years ago. I watched it again after seeing "Juno" at the theater and Muriel's Wedding was clearly a better film of the same genre. If you liked Toni Collette as the mother in "Little Miss Sunshine" and Rachel Griffiths as Brenda in "Six Feet Under" (HBO), you'll love their career-making tour de force in Muriel's Wedding.

First of all, I do enjoy Australian comedies, but this one bordered on boring me to turning it off. I think the biggest issue I had was that I didn't like the main character. We learn early on in the film that Muriel is a loser who dreams of her marriage some day. However, she is also extremely dishonest and does not stay true to the friends that stay true to her. With such a character in the middle of the screen, I could not connect with this person.
