The Spanish/Argentinian Of Love and Shadows (De Amor y Sombras) is a fragmentary adaptation of the Isabel Allende novel of the same name. The scene is Chile, during the dictatorial Pinochet regime of the early 1970s. Journalist Jennifer Connelly, insulated from the truth and enjoying the romantic favors of Army officer Camillo Gallardin, prefers to turn a blind eye to the political turmoil all around her. She changes her attitude abruptly when she falls in love with charismatic self-styled anarchist Antonio Banderas. The grim realities depicted in the Allende novel are soft-pedalled in favor of the Connelly-Banderas love story-which, truth to tell, doesn't play very well on screen. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

I read the book by Isabel Allende first, and I was absolutely mesmerized. So many stories and details packed into a book kept me fascinated the whole way through. However, the fast pace did not carry over well into the movie. I think I would have been lost without having read the book. And why was this in English? Jennifer Connelly could not keep her accent straight, and others butchered so many words it was hard to follow at times. This had so much potential, but instead flopped. If you want other Latin American scandal movies, I recommend 'Sub Terra' (about the horrors of a mining company and the oppression of peasants) or 'The Official Story' (about Los Desaparecidos, or the people who disappeared in a military regime in Argentina.) Both of these are fascinating and well made.

This movie is excellent! I have read the book by Isabel Allende and the movie follows the book very closely. It is a great watch if u r interested in happened in Chile And Argentina with the disapperance of people during the take over of the government by the military!

A bore from beginning to end, sexless, nearly amorphous in structure, and wastes the talents of the two leads. Jennifer Connely, one of the great and sexy screen faces of our time, should have sizzled. But she's barely lukewarm.
