I mean, what are these star ratings in comparison to? If they are in comparison to recent American gang/heist films, then it gets a four or four and a half. If you're comparing it specifically to the French film noir genre, then it gets a little less. It's not the best Melville, but it is mostly compelling, and it features a great cast. Melville's Le Samourai is a better film, and Souffle feels like the warm-up in comparison.

If one is a fan of Melville-directed neo-realism French gangster films, this is well worth watching. Surely it is dated and subtitles are always a slight inconvenience, but this is a worth-while exercise in the genre, a French version of crook on the run, with parallels to a good Bogart film with Gallic finesse.
