The California Kid (1974)

The California Kid (1974)
Member Rating:
Martin Sheen is at his most "James Dean-ish" and Vic Morrow at his most sadistic in the made-for-TV The California Kid. Sheen plays a hot rodder whose brother dies at the hands of sheriff Morrow. It is Morrow's habit to punish speeders by deliberately running them off precipitous mountain curves. Sheen goads Morrow into a no-survivors chase up a steep mountain road--where more than a few surprises await the homicidal lawkeeper. Martin Sheen's souped-up, garishly decorated jalopy gives the best and most consistent "performance" in The California Kid. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

This is a telemovie so it's in 4:3 aspect ratio (no widescreen). The setting is 1958 and most of the sets and props seem to conform but the soundtrack is very 70s jazzy disco. Morrow did well as the mean cop which he's done several times before. Sheen's performance will remind you of his son, Charlie. The pace is a bit slow as the Kid discovers the secret of the town and comes up with his plan to fix it. Nolte did alright but most of the other TV actors were just adequate. Take note at the beginning as you will see a sailor who looks like Emilio Estevez - that's Martin's brother, Joe! Also, Sheen debuts his quick way of putting on a jacket which he liked to do as President Bartlett in The West Wing. See this made-for-TV movie only if you just want to study what passed for television in 1970s America.
