Esther (1985)

Esther (1985)
Member Rating:
In this experimental film that deals metaphorically with Arab-Jewish relations in the Middle East, left-leaning director Amos Gitai uses Biblical history to comment on the current situation in Israel and its vicinity. This story deals in part with the Jewess Esther and how she managed to save her people from extermination after she became the wife of the king of Persia. But the setting is a slum near Haifa and the ancient city of Acre. As the mummers walk through their parts with lines taken from the scriptures, the camera moves slowly through scenes or stops entirely. Sounds of the modern world start to intrude on the ancient setting, and in the final sequences of the film, the actors now wear modern clothes as they walk through the streets of Acre, each telling their own personal history -- and a parallel emerges between the ancient story of Esther saving the Jews and the modern Middle East. The cast is comprised of both Arab and Jewish actors. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

This isn't anything like the Esther stories that I'm used to. At first I was really confused because it was in another language, but once I got passed that I thought I was fine, but then I was thrown off by the fact that it was in a modern setting, with modern noises and sometimes with modern clothing like shoes, but with somewhat ancient looking clothes. At first I hated this production because I felt confused lost and upset. I was thinking, "What happened to the Esther story? How could they do this." But I watched the ending and that explain so! much. Once that was watch this movie makes sense. If you can make it to that part. If not watch that, then come back to the movie and you may understand why the director did what he did.

The film Esther is true to form. Most interesting is the setting in Israel. Shame they couldn't stop the noise of the our present time and remove the power lines and rubber tires and have a more true to life era but regardless Esther was a delight to listen to and to read the subtitles....
