This 1954 Disney version of Jules Verne's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea represented the studio's costliest and most elaborate American-filmed effort to date. Kirk Douglas plays a trouble-shooting 19th century seaman, trying to discover why so many whaling ships have been disappearing of late. Teaming with scientist Paul Lukas and diver Peter Lorre, Douglas sets sail to investigate--and is promptly captured by the megalomaniac Captain Nemo (James Mason), who skippers a lavish, scientifically advanced submarine. The film's special effects, including a giant squid, were impressive enough in 1954 to win an Academy Award. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Still a highly imaginative adveture epic. James Mason is masterful as Captain Nemo. Kirk Douglas is great as the spoiler who just won’t stay captured. Modern special effects could not have improved this movie much. It’s still wondrous to see. I highly recommend it for the whole family.

I have loved it each of the multiple times I have seen it. It was wonderful to watch it again with my preteen granddaughters this time.

20,000 Leagues under the sea is quite an cinematic accomplishment. I'd go so far to say it's typical of Disney - Which is a compliment - They always seem to be ahead of the game when it comes to the feel, look, and special effects of a movie. This movie was made in 1954 and still looks better than alot of movies today. The adventures at sea and the squid are incredible. The down side is the movie is a little slow, 130 minutes is too long. The movie sags in the middle and some of the comedy falls flat. Some of the content is cheesy and over the top. Otherwise it’s a timeless memorable vibrant classic; one for the whole family to enjoy multiple times over. That Squid scene was really outstanding - you can even see that scene was copied for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest.
