Duval, Jones, Haas, great actors. This was an unsual movie, more about the time period and Duval aging.

Foote brought Of Mice and Men to the big screen. This is a post Civil War Texas plantation where the use of slaves was replaced by tenant farming and that in turn by convict labor. The plot is about a thirteen year old boy who had completed six months of labor and was trying to collect his $12.50 so that he could go home to Houston and buy a tombstone for his daddy's grave by Christmas. Duvall plays old man Sol, the owner, obviously afflicted with Alzheimer disease. He is without self-awareness and is unredeemed by anything he says or does. The boy is scared out of his skull that the gun toting coot is going to accidentally shoot someone. Sol latches on to the boy but since Sol is incapable of learning from the boy's humanity, its not meaningful. Since it was winter, the scenes are depressingly cold, dark, and damp. Only once did the sun come out as it shone on the bright green cane stalks in the fields. The land was fertile, the people on it seemed incapable of growth.
