A Cruel Romance (1983)

A Cruel Romance (1983)
Member Rating:
Slow-paced and in some longer stretches, this period melodrama features the heroine Larisa (Larisa Guzeyeva) and her various, competing suitors. Sergei Paratov (Nikita Mikhalkov) dashes into Larisa's sister's wedding like a knight in shining armor and starts to court Larisa. Her head is turned, but not enough to keep her from getting engaged to the boring Yuli Karandyshev (Andrei Myagkov) when the handsome, singing, dancing, and bon vivant Sergei has the temerity to be gone for a year. What ensues is a classic case of seduction by the immoral Sergei and then the inevitable happens -- betrayal and tragedy. The movie is based on the classical play Bespridannitsa ("Without Dowry") by Alexander Ostrovsky that was previously filmed by Yakov Protazanov in 1937. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

I enjoyed the movie and it can be viewed in Russian. To view in Russian, go to dubbing, click Russian, then go to subtitles, select English, then press View. I almost passed up this one because the synopsis was too vague. It's a movie about how women in the Victorian era had to solely depend on finding a good and successful husband to survive. Makes me hate the men who make women believe they will marry the girl, and abandon her after making her wait, leaving her no choice but to find any guy that would take care of her as a result of her damaged reputation. It's sad that Larissa gives up on love after the boat owner, and that her suiters fight over her like a piece of object. She decides to be a gold digger, since she looked for love and couldn't find her lover to love her back. I won't say more, because I'll ruin the ending. I wish they would've used more dramatic music for what happened at the end instead of that annoying gypsy yippy music.

Great movie, great actors, but terrible English translation killed this version: all personalities were completely lost in translation and dubbing.
