Terror of Frankenstein (1975)

Terror of Frankenstein (1975)
Member Rating:
Terror of Frankenstein, an Irish/Swedish coproduction, avoids the gimmickry and anachronisms which have distinguished previous versions of the Frankenstein story. This is done through the simple expedient of returning to the source, the original 19th century Mary Shelley novel. Terror is virtually a page-by-page retelling of the Shelley book, taking us from Dr. Frankenstein's earliest efforts to create synthetic life, progressing through the creation of his monster and the horrible consequences, and ending with the Doctor dead and his doleful monster exiled to an ice floe. This would remain the most faithful version of the classic horror novel until Kenneth Branagh's overproduced, underdeveloped version in 1994. Curiously, Terror of Frankenstein (also known as Victor Frankenstein) has been generally overlooked by film buffs, probably because it lacks star names or a "cult" director at the helm. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

I am unsure what movie the reviewer was watching, but it certainly wasn't this horrid drivel. Bad production values, less than stellar action, and the acting is so bad!!! It loosely follows Mary Shelley's vision yes, but it plods along so slowly and that I was tempted to turn it off. Alas, I happen to be the kind of person that keeps hoping things will get better.... they didn't. Ever. Save the online rental for something else, trust me....

This 1975 version of Mary Shelly's timeless book has a conscientious presentation. Though sometimes slow, watch more for the drama about man playing God & the creation of selfish fervor. The movie faithfully conveys Shelly's theme: man's ambitions for greatness/power. Victor Frankenstein has it all-wealth, pretty girlfriend, good family, supportive friends, intelligence. But he also has a passion that grows more than logic [intriguingly so as this is what devises the monster]. Madden with this passion his skewed vision deters examining full consequences of his work. He creates a monstrous man who inadvertently evolves into the monster we associate with the name Frankenstein, abandoned by his creator. Although we can see how Victor, the creator, is really the fiend, he eventually evolves too as he becomes in tune with reality, a set of terrible events that are consequences of his imprudence. The film is memorable because it implies the truth in the adage: Man is his own destruction.

Has to be very loosely based upon Mary Shelley's version. Does not explain her whole Frankenstein plot like another movie does. I thought the guy who played Victor Frankenstein was pale as a ghost and looked as if he needed some new life not to mention his bad acting. Even his monster bored me. A real yawner.
