Roxie Hart (1942)

Roxie Hart (1942)
Member Rating:
Based on the Ben Hecht/Charlie McArthur play Chicago, Roxie Hart is a short-but-sweet satire of highly publicized court trials. Ginger Rogers plays showgirl Roxie Hart, whose no-good husband kills a man and insists that Roxie take the blame, since juries seldom send a woman to the chair. She agrees, figuring that the publicity will be beneficial to her career. Roxie's case is taken by grandstanding attorney Adolphe Menjou, who regards the sacred halls of justice as his own three-ring circus. George Montgomery plays the reporter covering the trial, who falls in love with Roxie and eventually marries her after she dumps her cowardly hubby. Roxie Hart plays fast and loose with legal ethics, but is no less hilarious because of it. Some of the best moments belong to Iris Adrian, as an imprisoned "Bonnie Parker"-type killer who's jealous that Roxie is stealing all the headlines. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Short, fast paced and sweet, this non musical and original version of the hit "Chicago" is a fine film in it's own right. Ginger Rogers is wonderfully cast in the title role. Plenty of saucy dialogue, highly entertaining.

I liked Ginger Rogers in this better than most of her films. And though it's entertaining, it hasn't aged that well, and is light stuff compared to the newer musical version.

I discovered this movie on the TCM channel. I couldn't help but wonder if it was related to the musical Chicago. For those of you who are also wondering, Roxie Hart is based on the same Ben Hecht/Charlie McArthur play as the more recent musical and film, Chicago. The movie has perhaps lasted so long due to classic dancing film star, Ginger Rogers. Rogers plays Roxie an imprisoned rising performer, who will due anything to achieve dancing fame. The movie then expectedly follows a similar plot to Chicago, with the exception of the romance bubbling between Roxie and press agent, Adolphe Menjou. Also due not expect to see much of a Velma Kelly character, this movie contains a different life solution for Roxie than Chicago. The movie is very light and enjoyable and while watching don't expect to see another Chicago, Roxie is its "own animal". It is sad that myself and many people simply watch this movie because of their interest in the musical, because Roxie is an overlooked classic.
