Queen Bee (1955)
Member Rating:
Queen Bee offers a stinging portrait of a mad, manipulative woman and chronicles her downfall and that of those around her in this dark drama. On first meeting, Eva Phillips (portrayed with delicious viciousness by Joan Crawford) is the epitome of Southern graciousness and charm. She and her husband, a textile magnate live together in a splendiferous Georgian plantation. Unfortunately, while others are easily beguiled by Mrs. Phillips, her husband knows what a ruthless she-devil she really is and loathes her. To cope with the pain of living with her, he has taken to drinking heavily. Trouble follows when the horrible Eva learns that her husband's sister is engaged to marry the manager of the estate, a man she once loved. Like the proverbial dog in the manger, Eva does all she can to destroy the relationship so she can have the manager back for herself. Unfortunately, she goes too far. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi

Of corse, Joan Crawford playing the bitch! I loved it! Some of the lines were so catty and in true Joan form! The other acting isn't the greatest, but to see Joan act as though she is beautiful is so funny! Those eyebrows! Rent it, if you want some camp in your day!

This wasn't as good as Harriet Craig where Joan is also controlling or Autumn Leaves but it is definitely not one of her worst movies (I haven't seen Trog yet but I'm sure it is probably her worst). Some of the lines were stinging but the movie wasn't as exciting as it could have been considering it is Joan Crawford. The Jennifer character was a bit boring or was it just the actress who was boring? If you're a Joan fan like I am, you might need to go to your local library and see if they have Joan movies that are not on dvd yet. I've found several at the library on VHS: Autumn Leaves, Johnny Guitar (one of the few westerns worth watching), I Live My Life, the Gorgeous Hussy, the Bride Wore Red, Mannequin, When Ladies Meet and others. Get her filmology from imdb for a complete list.
