Graham Greene wrote this witty comedy inspired by Cold War paranoia. Jim Wormald (Alec Guiness) is an Englishman selling vacuum cleaners in Cuba on the cusp of the revolution. Hawthorne (Noel Coward), a British intelligence agent, is looking for information on Cuban affairs and recruits Jim to act as a spy. Jim has no experience in espionage and no useful knowledge to pass along, but Hawthorne is willing to pay for his services, and since Jim's daughter Milly (Jo Morrow) has expensive tastes, he can use the money. To keep Hawthorne happy (and his paychecks coming in), he turns in reports on the Cuban revolution that are copied from public documents, "hires" additional agents who don't exist, and presents blueprints of secret weapons that are actually schematics of his carpet sweepers. However, Hawthorne and associate "C" (Ralph Richardson) think that Jim is doing splendid work and encourage him to continue; meanwhile, Capt. Segura (Ernie Kovacs), the elegantly corrupt chief of police, has been fooled by Jim's charade into believing he's a real spy -- and has also become attracted to Milly. Our Man in Havana also features Burl Ives and Maureen O'Hara in supporting roles. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Our Man In Havana is probably the best movie adaptation of a Graham Greene novel. I believe he partly wrote the screen play. This is a black and white film starting Alec Guinness as a vacuum cleaner salesman in pre Castro Havana. Noel Coward dead pans his way throughout the film as a recruiter for the British secret service. He hires Guinness to be the chief spy in Cuba. Guinness knows nothing about spying. His drinking buddy Burl Ives just tells him to make stuff up. Guinness needs the extra money from the British for his daughter so he goes along with the idea. Ernie Kovacs plays the corrupt Cuban policeman who has a romantic interest in Gunness' daughter. Maureen O'Hara is sent to Cuba from Britain to serve as Guinness's secretary when his reports indicate that a new secret weapon is being developed in Cuba. Do not expect James Bond but appreciate it this movie for what it is. This film is outstanding.

The accidental innocent mistaken for a spy and subjected to various outrages is a mainstay plot. This is one of the few where the subject is actually aware of the situation and volunteers for it. Accordingly, the story is much more John LeCarre than a yuk-yuk comedy. The supporting players also make this movie unique: Ernie Kovacs as the Cuban police captain, who turns what could have been a corrupt caricature into a very nuanced character and in the process manages to steal the show out from under an all-superstar cast. Burl Ives (yes, the singer of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Raindeer) also turns in a fine performance in a serious acting role. IT's always a shame to miss The only downside for me is that it wasn't Maureeen O'Hara's flaming locks - but really it seems more appropriate for 1950's Cuba to be in black-and-white anyhow. A good evening's entertainment.
