Little Sunset (1915)

Little Sunset (1915)
The sentimental drama starring Hobart Bosworth was released when the baseball season of 1915 was at its height. Charles E. Van Loan, known for his baseball stories, was the author here. Little Sunset Jones (a 9-year-old Gordon Griffith) is the son of a pro baseball player (Joseph Ray) and a fan of the Apaches, a major league team. He especially admires their star player Gus Bergstrom, known as "the terrible Swede" (Bosworth). When Mr. Jones becomes the team's shortstop he takes the motherless boy on the road with him. Little Sunset becomes the team mascot and a special friend to Bergstrom. But Bergstrom has been playing ball for fifteen years and thinks he is losing his touch. A mid-field collision with another player and a chewing out by the team's manager (Marshall Stedman) convinces him to quit. He goes home to attend to business there but the townsfolk lambaste him for being a quitter. Little Sunset, who was away sick when Bergstrom left, is just as disguste! d. So the Terrible Swede returns to the Apaches just in time to help them win the pennant -- with the help, of course, of Little Sunset. Then he retires with dignity. ~ Janiss Garza, Rovi
