City of Women (1980)
Member Rating:
In this dream-sequence film, renowned Italian director Federico Fellini expounds at length on the nature, complexities, attitudes, and hang-ups of women and how this all relates to men "hunting" sexual conquests. Snaporaz (Marcello Mastroianni) is traveling in a compartment on a train when he lapses into sleep and dreams the ensuing story. He follows a woman off the train and through a field and then loses her. Soon, as a representative of the male sex in general he finds himself in a hotel, among myriad women attending a feminist conference. Surreal episodes take him through a villa with his alter-ego Dr. Katzone (Ettore Manni, who died during filming) and references to his sexual exploits. Reunited with his former wife for a moment, he starts another sequence which reviews his past. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

For me, this is best movie ever. I saw it 15 times, and I will see it again. The whole movie is a trip to subconscious mind showing how women are seen through eyes of heterosexual men... All stage of development of sexuality are seen as they appear in real life. Loved the movie.

Yet another freaky, Freudian-imbibed, Fellini flop.

Don't waste your time watching this. It is garbage. It jumps from scene to scene and is like watching someone else's dream that makes no sense. Man on a train wants to fornicate with a pretty woman. She gets off train but goes into woods away from station. The man follows & arrives at a feminist convention. He winds up on roller skates. While trying to get back to train station on back of motorcycle with a fat, middle-aged, unattractive woman, she tries to rape him but is interrupted by her very old mother beating her. Several more scenes follow which are somewhat connected but bizarre. Was this supposed to be an adult version of Alice in Wonderland but of a middle aged man with one thing on his mind? Oh, by the way, did I mention it is in Italian with English subtitles?
