John and Mary (1969)

John and Mary (1969)
Member Rating:
John and Mary attracted a great deal of press coverage in 1969 for being the one of the first American films in which the male and female leads (Dustin Hoffman and Mia Farrow) start out the film by spending the night together, rather than holding off until the end. The morning after, the boy and girl wander about New York, wondering if they'll truly commit themselves to one another. Both characters are haunted by unsuccessful earlier affairs, and both have enough hang-ups to fill volumes of psychological textbooks. Come nightfall, John and Mary end up back in bed...and learn each other's names for the first time. John and Mary was considered "beautiful," "progressive" and "significant" in the permissive 1960s; nowadays it's about as controversial as The CBS Morning News. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

This movie was too cute! The characters are so fractured because of their pasts that they're afraid to move forward on the attraction they feel for each other. Naturally, most relationships don't progress that fast in a day, though. Mia Farrow has the cutest look in this film, and I particularly like the narrated thoughts during their conversations. Definitely worth watching!

It is amazing that relationships don't change much after 38 years. This is a great movie. I love the way there is not too much chatter, but it still says a lot. Movies today have too much "witty banter" and try too hard. Still contemporary today.

From 1969 comes one of Dustin Hoffman's earlier films and co-stars Mia Farrow. For it's time it was thought to be quite brave as it revolves around a one-night stand and the thougts and insecurities of each of them (aka John & Mary). This is VERY indicitive of the late 60s, but perhaps SO much so in style ad dialog that it really doesn't hold up well at all. However, if a Hoffman fan or of films from the 60s (or both) this film would then be worth your watch.
