Samurai Banners (1969)
Member Rating:

Furin Kazan (AKA Samurai Banners) is based on the bestselling Japanese novel of the same name, written by Yasushi Inove. Toshiro Mifune plays Yamamoto, a physically impaired 17th century Samurai, whose wife and child have been massacred in a war. He signs on to advise a warlord, believing that the fellow has the strength to kill off all of the rival leaders and unify the nation, but he quietly objects to the man's pompous arrogance, sadism and self-centeredness. The assignment succeeds triumphantly as the men, working together, vanquish every competitor across the land. The warlord then approves his request to wipe out a neighboring ruler with whom they've made a pact; Yamamoto kills him, and then stops the man's princess daughter from committing seppuku. He falls in love with the heiress, and she with him, but the warlord wants her as a concubine. Yamamoto agrees to this request out of devotion to his leader, and even convinces the young woman to obey the request. After she conceives an illegitimate child with the warlord, Yamamoto devotes himself and his life to strengthening the power and reach of Japan and spreading the belief that the child is the rightful heir to the throne. He thus ensures that the baby will grow up to become the ruler of a unified nation. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

This historical drama depects actual events in the Feudal history of Japan. If you like that era and are interested in what some of the main characters at that time were like, then you will like this movie. If you are looking for a lot of high tech action, this is not it. Mifune becomes the highest ranking adviser to a powerful Lord, and assists him in making an even greater rise in power, and acquisition of land. Mifune seeks to fulfill his lifelong dream of seeing one feifdom stretch across Japan from the Sea of Japan to the Pacific, and has determined that this particular Lord is best positioned to see that dream come true. Lots of great background material in the bonus material that assists in putting this story into perspective, including biographies on each of the characters. I would not put this as one of Mifune's best but it has a broader historical scope and is important for that reason. I prefer Yojimbo, Sanjuro and Samurai Rebellion for his work.

If you like this genre (which we really do) you will be very happy with this Toshiro movie. As usual, we got lost about 2/3 of the way through the movie - who is betraying who etc. but we always enjoy the action and hopefully realistic portrayal of life in that era.

an excellent movie whose main character, yamamoto, a crippled samurai warrior with the mindset of a general, carries the entire film and keeps your interest throughout. the subplot of the love story is also very interesting. good acting throughout. WATCH THIS MOVIE!
