Based on the best-selling novel by George V. Higgins, The Friends of Eddie Coyle chronicles the last days of a weary Boston-based weapons dealer. Eddie Coyle (Robert Mitchum) doesn't want to serve a life sentence in prison, so he becomes an informant for both the police and the treasury department. Coyle is likewise unwilling to give up his lifestyle, thus he continues his illegal gun-running operation for the underworld. The mob becomes aware that Eddie is squealing to the cops, so they send his best friend, Dillon (Peter Boyle), to rub him out. Dillon compassionately takes Eddie out on the town, treating him to dinner and a hockey game...then drives to a deserted field to carry out his orders. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

... you will get burned. Following the pecking order of the Irish Mob in Boston & a keen insight into the players. Without mentioning who they actually are if you're interested in friendships, loyalties and a genius of story telling this is a contender. There are slow moments which build the suspense for irony superbly. As much as I hesitate to say it, with such a great core of actors, this one could be remade today and know one would know any different.

Bob Mitchum at the top of his game. Peter Boyle, what a scumbag! How I missed this gem back in the 70's, I will never know. Great flick!

Robert Mitchum is fantastic. Eddie Coyle is realistically shot (not that I'm expert on robbing banks, mind you), and the gritty/raw feel of the acting, camera work, editing, direction surely make this film a benchmark for films of this genre to this day...just look at The Town after watching this film if you doubt me.
