Forty Guns (1957)

Forty Guns (1957)
Member Rating:
Cult hero Samuel Fuller wrote and directed this visually inventive western, which didn't fare well with American audiences but earned a potent reputation with European cineastes. Jessica Drummond (Barbara Stanwyck) is a despotic landowner who, with a posse of hired guns, has made herself the law of Cochise County, Arizona, with the weak-willed sheriff Ned Logan (Dean Jagger) knuckling under to her demands. One day, Griff Bonnell (Barry Sullivan), a one-time gunfighter turned United States Marshall, arrives with his brothers Wes (Gene Barry) and Chico (Robert Dix) to restore democratic law and order to Cochise County. Griff soon tangles with Drummond's brother Brockie (John Ericson), though Jessica is attracted to the new lawman, and Griff finds love with female gunsmith Louvenia Spangler (Eve Brent). Griff and Louvenia marry, but on their wedding day, Brockie murders Wes, and Griff, who takes pride in the fact that he has never fired his gun since becoming a marshal, must now break his vow of non-violence. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Typical Barbara Stanwyck 50's western movie. The only movie is probably was good in was Dial M for Murder. With Barry Sullivan and Gene Barry, the movie would be nothing worth watching. The only thing interesting about it was the beginning when Barbara Stanwyck as "The High Riding Woman" comes galloping down a hill on a white stallion with 40 men riding behind her. This was kind of a Wyatt Earp saga, with three brothers as lawmen and one brother gets murdered. Sound familiar??? Recommended for 50's movie buffs.

Kind of funny in a "B movie" sort of way. Not well put together and hard to follow, but certain scenes are funny in their awkwardness. It might be a candidate for Comedy Central's old show Mystery Science Theater.

"That' a big gun you've got there. Mind if I touch it?" "Careful, it might go off in your face." This movie is full of these plus an open-air gay bathouse scene and a strolling minstrel!.
