Eroica (1957)

Eroica (1957)
Member Rating:
This comedy-drama from director Andrzej Munk tells two stories of life in Poland during World War II. In "Scherzo Alla Pollaca," a man trying to worm his way out of military service goes underground, and begins working the black market to support his family. He unwittingly becomes involved with the Polish Resistance, and in time he becomes a brave and valued member of the rebel forces, whose will to survive proves to be a greater asset than many soldiers' ideal of self-sacrifice. The second segment, "Ostinato Lugubre," is set in a Polish concentration camp; one inmate decides that he can no longer stand to be confined and makes a brave if foolhardy attempt to escape. While no one is sure if the man actually made it out, his absence troubles the guards and provides a sense of hope and inspiration for the other prisoners. Eroica was the winner of the FIPRESCI Award at the 1959 Mar Del Plata Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Carol C. It's funny but my reaction was almost the opposite of Maurice W's. The first half seemed a bit incoherent and jumbled to me and the comedic aspects were utterly at odds with the external conflict of the war, whereas the second half pulled me in, It reminded me a lot of Sartre's "No Exit." with the men in the POW camp being trapped with each other in a monotonous existence in barren surroundings. One man reputed to have escaped is their sole inspiration. But he is actually hiding in the rafters. His symbolic value is inestimable. One sees how soul destroying the situation is. The director puts the viewer in touch with the inmates experience of the war as prisoners. It is a kind of hell.

Movie was in 2 parts. Part 1 I would rate 4 ****. It had humor, action and a good plot.along with good acting. Part 2 was very much unlike anything I have seen or heard about prisoner of war or concentration camps and was dull to watch. I fast forward much of it as it was mostly boring. I would rate part 2 as 1/2 star for the aforementioned reasons. Bud Wolf

First of all,one of the viewers sais there was no subtitles.I thought so at first when I put the dvd in my xbox.It didn't work.It did work, however,in my dvd player. The movie was not as good as I thought.First half was a bore. The second half was better, although it wasn't what I expected.More of a POW camp, not a concentration camp.I did not see any of the men in the movie suffer as one did in a concentration camp. They had food, drink and I didn't see any forced labor...
