Frank Miller's seminal graphic novel The Dark Knight Returns is adapted for the small screen with a sprawling Warner Premiere animated film series that finds an old and weary Bruce Wayne (voiced by Robocop himself, Peter Weller) donning the cape and cowl once again after a long retirement. Covering the first two issues of the series, Part 1 pits the masked crusader against once-reformed Harvey Dent (voiced by Wade Williams), as well as a mutant army who has painted Gotham's streets red with blood. Ariel Winter (Modern Family) plays a female version of Robin, with Dark Shadows' David Selby rounding out the voice cast. Takes place in the future, looking somewhat post-apocalyptic. Batman hasn't been seen in ages, and Gotham is worse than its ever been. Mutants and their followers (kids dressed to mimic them) are running wild and have basically laid claim to Gotham. Batman makes an appearance again to start setting things straight. It was awesome. A must for fans. It stayed pretty true to the graphic novel, it was like reading it all over again (with some very minor differences) For example: they kept Bruce's attempts to go out in a blaze of glory, but cut the narratives where he thinks to himself "this would be a dumb way to die". It's forgiveable. Still, I can't wait for the 2nd part.

Set in the mid to late 80's, this is based on Frank Miller's 80's interpretation of Batman, in where he's ruthless, merciless, and the truest form of a vigilante, unafraid to even kill the villains if he has to, in the name of justice. The main story deals with Batman in his later years dealing with Two-Face and a punk mutant street gang. This is the darkest, grittest form of Batman and if you don't like hardcore violence, you won't like this. But for everyone else, this is a must watch, up there with the Dark Knight trilogy.
