A Day at the Beach (1970)

A Day at the Beach (1970)
Member Rating:
Roman Polanski wrote the screenplay for this decidedly offbeat drama. Bernie (Mark Burns) plays a rootless wanderer with a fondness for alcohol and no clear goals in life. Bernie stumbles into a seaside resort community with Winnie (Beatrice Edney), a young girl in leg braces, in tow. As Bernie starts hitting the bottle, his physical and emotional stability starts to crumble, and Winnie begins to worry for his safety, until he finally collapses and Winnie panics, with no one left to look after her. Peter Sellers makes a brief cameo appearance as a gay shopkeeper who sets up a booth to take advantage of the beach traffic. While Polanski originally intended to direct A Day At The Beach, he later turned over the reigns to filmmaker Simon Hesera; it was his first dramatic feature, and his last. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

A one-note story of a chaotic day in the life of an alcoholic as he takes his young niece with him during a tumultuous, day-long drinking binge. A sad, stark, ugly staging of the man's progressive degeneration over one day. Not entertainment for the masses, the film would serve well to reinforce for the recovering alcoholic to stay clean lest slipping into oblivion. Polanski's (abandoned half-way through) experiment here falls flat in the other director's hands. The odd cameo with Peter Sellers as a gay queen isn't enough to justify watching. (He is credited as, "A. Queen.") The entire movie is set in the surrounds of a sea shore town and boardwalk on a rainy day. The action centers on the man's pursuit of booze and progressively worsening drunkenness all whilst dragging the young, handicapped girl around with him right up to the end. For those unfamiliar with alcohol addiction, this film would likely be a bore and a chore, if not at least a deterrent to alcohol abuse.
