A doctor on the verge of eradicating AIDS discovers that his experimental vaccine has deadly side effects after attempting to treat an ailing boy, and causing a mysterious outbreak. Dr. Andrew Stanton (Brian Krause) has devoted his entire life to curing the scourge of his era. Now, after years of painstaking research, it appears as if Dr. Stanton is about to defeat AIDS. But just as his new vaccine is being prepared for trials, a young boy arrives at the hospital after falling into a deep coma. Unable to deliver a proper diagnosis, Dr. Stanton attempts to stabilize the patient by injecting him with the experimental serum. This film is a top shelf thriller. It offers an entertaining and suspenseful screenplay and great direction, and a competent cast, especially with Brian Krause as Stanton. There is a steady build of suspense, a wild and horrific third act, and even a few philosophical questions along the way. I highly recommend ASHES to genre fans that like decent story and characterization in their horror films.
