Chushingura (1962)

Chushingura (1962)
Member Rating:
This sweeping historical epic has sometimes been labelled the Gone with the Wind of Japan; at any rate, it's almost the same length as Gone (the film was originally released in two parts). Chusha Ichikawa plays a powerful and ruthless feudal lord who battles virtuous young noble Yuzo Kayama. Ichikawa is temporarily victorious when he tricks Kayama into committing Hara Kiri. Vengeance is meted out by Kayama's forty-seven samurai retainers. Based on a venerable Japanese legend, the story of Chushingura has been filmed several times, but only the 1941 version (47 Ronin) matched the grandeur of director Hiroshi Inagaki's 1962 version. In some English-speaking countries, Chushingura has been released in a shorter version titled The Loyal 47 Ronin. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

A long movie; it would benefit viewers greatly if they familiarized themselves with the 'facts' before viewing. Google "Ako ronin" or "47 Ronin" for sources. Can be very confusing at times, because all the younger performers look alike (I know, a stereotype), because of the identical hair styles and generally similiar facial structure. That makes it initially hard to distinguish characters, which makes plot development tough to follow.

One of the best stories ever told but this is not one of the best versions out there. Rumor has it that General MacArthur forbid it to be told while Japan was occupied by the US after WW II. I have seen better versions of this story done in considerable shorter time, as it is one of the most popular stories ever told in Japan. Nontheless, if you are not aware of the story of the 47 Samurai, it might be worth a look. I thought parts of it was confusing. The most glaring problem is a lack of background material, as this movie was intended for Japanese audiences who would be intimately aware of all the details surrounding this story, which could've been solved with some sort of additional material on the dvd. Hopefully, someone will release another version of this film before it is remade by Hollywood and, consequently, butchered.

This movie is a good movie. It tells a great story but I felt that it was confusing. I had trouble following all the storylines in this movie. This led to frustration. Although the storyline was great, the fight scene(s) were poorly performed although the acting was fine. Overally, would I watch this movie again? NO. Would I recommend it? Yes, but you have to pay attention!
