American Experience: Robert E. Lee (2010)
Member Rating:
Few figures in U.S. military history are as divisive as General Robert E. Lee (1807-70). Adored by some for his heroic leadership of the Confederacy during the Civil War - to such a degree that countless statues still commemorate him in the American South - and resented or loathed by others for the southern cause that he promulgated, Lee continues to court endless fascination. This episode of PBS's American Experience documentary series explores Lee's life, accomplishments and reputation, with a particularly strong emphasis on his string of military victories and the idolization surrounding Lee in the 140 years that followed his death. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi

While it certainly must be true that Lee was human like everyone else, one would think from this American Experience episode that Lee was an incompetent hypocrite, a failure as a husband, father, and so on.. Many episodes of Lee's life are either left out or barely mentioned. His heading up Washington/Lee college is construed as "hiding" from the authorities. He is portrayed as virtually the spirit behind secession and the war itself.. Although it mentions that he lost Arlington House to a spiteful Washington bureacrat (who had lost a son fighting in the Union Army, as I recall), it is convenienty not mentioned that he was not readmitted to the Union, even after swearing the Oath of Loyalty until 150 years after his death.. Although this is an excellent program, and I would encourage anyone to view it, I just think it is not very objective, I think.
