This film adheres more closely to the original concept than the remake, determining to present the scenario rather than be dramatic for its own sake. Great black and white photography and less loose ends than the remake. (In this version you can clearly see how the factions developed.)

With a cast of unknown actors, an excellent script, and solid editing and camera work, this movie simply works. Whether it addresses Golding's intent to explore "evil" is another matter. As a multi-layered piece, this movie does other things (such as illustrate accurately what childhood is) perhaps too well.

A masterpiece... and I don't toss that word around. Probably the best adaptation of a modern classic ever put on film. This amazing movie does the impossible and goes the novel one better, cutting thru the descriptive padding to form a sleek, propulsive, emotionally explosive experience. Golding's spirit surrounds these boys and at times you can almost see him, smiling over them with wicked satisfaction.
