Arguably the most important female director of her era, Akermanâs range is astounding; experimental, musical-comedy, introspective drama.
Hotel Monterey ****1/2. Silent documentary in a cheap NY hotel. No story, just images that cross the sadness of Edward Hopper with the weirdness of David Lynch, like a great photo book come to life.
Je, Tu, Il, Elle ****1/4 Sad, funny character study of a young, neurotic woman Intelligent, complex wistfully touching, but missing that last step to greatness.
Les Rendez-Vous D'Anna **** Amazingly shot. Traveling to a film festival, a young femme filmmaker has a series of sadly empty encounters with people.
News From Home ***1/2 Images of New York, accompanied by Akerman reading letters from her mother in France. Less impact than the similar 'Hotel Monterey'.
La Chamber **1/2 experimental short. The camera circles a room, occasionally passing Akerman in bed, treating her as another object. Interesting idea, slightly dull to watch.
