A low-budget restaurateur finds himself in a big vat of trouble in this comedy from director Fatih Akin. Zinos Kazantsakis (Adam Bousdoukos) runs a cheap restaurant in a run-down warehouse distract that he calls the Soul Kitchen. While the food isn't very good, it doesn't cost much and a regular clientele shows up each evening for cheap beer, filling food, and the company of their peers. Bad luck follows Zinos like a shadow, and when his girlfriend, Nadine (Pheline Roggan), runs off to China, he decides to follow, putting his brother (Moritz Bleibtreu) in charge of the restaurant. However, his brother is a convicted criminal, and before long the city's underworld has taken over the place and tax collectors are threatening to shut them down. Zinos returns after Nadine pledges her heart to another, and discovers his diner is a shambles; hoping to put the Soul Kitchen back on its feet, Zinos hires a flashy gourmet chef (Birol Unel) to revamp the menu, but soon he's alienated his old customers while new ones haven't taken their place. This frothy, light, slightly shapeless but endearing comedy is further proof of the protean nature of the talents of Fatih Akin. While nowhere near as good a film as his great dark comedy-drama Head On or his complex. philosophical The Edge of Heaven, I appreciate that Akin seems more interested in exploring different genres and stories than creating a signature style. This is the kind of comedy that makes you smile more than laugh, and is stronger on character and acting than on comic set pieces, but even that jokes that do not work are forgivable. A shaggy, likable young Greek man living in Germany tries to start his own restaurant, juggling his ex-con brother, his out-of town girlfriend, his slightly insane chef, and a rival who wants his space. Not an important film, but it captures something wonderful about being young and trying to find your place in the world.

The movie was so-so. I think it had a very good start, but it turns tedious towards the middle. It also has a good end. The acting was good. Prepare for some nude scenes. If you like movies about restaurants and cooking, this movie has some of that too. Enjoy. GM.

I enjoyed the characters in this movie. They are true to life characters. The directer did a great job of developing the main character. It is a light comedy that made me smile alot. It is worth the watch.
