The Smithereens were a truly unique entry into the early 80's music scene. While other bands like REM and the B 52s were doing the same thing musically, the Smiithereens were never one particular style. Some grunge, some 60's oriented garage metal, and a sound heavily influenced by such pop masters as The Beatles and Roy Orbison. The result was a truly original sound that was years ahead of their time in some respects. One listen to "The Blues Before And After" or their radio hits such as "Only A Memory" or "Blood And Roses", and you'll be pulled in too. It's a true shame that these guys were never bigger than they should have really been. Of all the early 80's bands that ever earned their street credit, the Smithereens were truly worthy of the praise they have gotten in the past, and they are a minor legend in the annals of garage rock history. "Top Of The Pops", indeed.
