Synopsis of Bedford: The Town They Left Behind

Bedford, Virginia was a small town hit hard by the Great Depression, and many young men living there joined the local chapter of the National Guard as a way to make some extra money -- volunteers were paid a dollar for each weekend of training, and some of the Guardsmen also discovered they were newly popular with gals who liked a man in uniform. Few of them ever expected that Bedford's National Guard unit would be called up to serve as foot soldiers in World War II, or that they'd find themselves on the front lines of the 1942 D-Day invasion. Casualties were heavy, and Bedford lost more men per capita on D-Day than any other city in America. In 2004, many Bedford residents feared that history would repeat itself when for the first time since the end of World War II, Bedford's Nation Guardsmen were called to duty and shipped out to join the fighting in Iraq. Filmmakers Elliot Berlin and Joe Fab examine the story of the men Bedford lost during World War II and the parallels to the war a new generation have been asked to fight in the documentary Bedford: The Town They Left Behind.
